Our History

Newspaper clipping, historical, United Way of Nevada County

Founded in 1983

Organized in 1983 by Nevada County Community Services Council, now Sierra Nevada Children’s Services.   The first Kick-off Breakfast was held in 1983, it generated $52,755 of its $90,000 goal.  

 

In 1989 Jan Bray was hired as first staff. Campaign was the sole focus of United Way and raised $200,000 at that time. 


In 1991, the largest Nevada County campaign ever, UWNC raised $329,000.   

In 1994 UWNC and Grass Valley Group held the first Day of Caring.

In 1997 UWNC launches website. In 1999 UWNC adds online donation capability. 

  

Over the years, UWNC has provided leadership to the following county collaborations or committees:

  1. Emergency Food & Shelter Local Board
  2. Together We Can
  3. Long-term Care
  4. Welfare Reform
  5. Community Assessment Project
  6. Success By 6
