Letter from our Executive Director, Megan Timpany For the last couple of weeks my family and I have been watching the Winter Olympics. I am truly impressed with the determination, passion and motivation these Olympic athletes have brought to Vancouver from all over the world. It is inspiring to see such great determination. It is also amazing to see how the community of Vancouver has come together and collaborated to put on such an immense event. I feel that it is all about community, and the community of Vancouver has shown the rest of the world how a community can really make a difference. Here in our county I have seen the same type of determination amongst volunteers. I have seen volunteers that really care about our community and want to get involved to make Nevada County a great place to live. Volunteers are truly the soul of our community. This edition of the United Way of Nevada County’s Newsletter is dedicated to all those great volunteers that continuously give back to our community. April is Volunteer Appreciation Month and here at United Way we wish to say “Thank You” to all of you who have given your time so generously to United Way of Nevada County and its partner agencies. One of these great volunteers is a woman named Terri Cooper-Meyers. She has been highlighted on page two of this edition of our newsletter. Terri is a true angel in our community. Last year we held our first annual Day of Action. This was an inspirational day of volunteerism. This year the 2nd annual “Day of Action” will be held on May 6th. This is a great time to come out and volunteer. Please see page two for more information on “Day of Action”. “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has” Margaret Mead It is a very busy time here at United Way of Nevada County. We are currently in the Community Investment phase of our annual cycle. Applications for funding have been distributed to our partner agencies, citizen review teams are forming and assessments on community needs are being compiled. This is an extensive process and United Way couldn’t do it without the help of our volunteers. These wonderful volunteers help to drive change and growth in our community. In this edition of our quarterly newsletter we have highlighted some of our partner agencies on page three. These agencies are doing a wonderful job in bringing change to our community. The three we have chosen to highlight and tell their stories are Sierra Foothill AIDS Foundation, Sierra Forever Families, and The Food Bank of Nevada County. The third annual United Way /Kane’s Penny Pitch is planned for June 19th. This is a great event. Mark your calendars now to come out and have fun pitching pennies at Kane’s. All the proceeds from this event go to supporting United Way of Nevada County. For more information on this event please see our website at UWNC.org. The fourth annual Barbecue Cook-Off will be taking place in August; more information on this event will be in our next publication. We have a lot of great events coming up this year and we hope you can join us. Please take a look at page four to see what upcoming events United Way has planned. As we have moved into the year 2010, many local businesses and government offices are being affected by the downturn in the economy. Employees are being laid off and companies are having a hard time keeping out of the red. Employees’ payroll pledging is an essential ingredient to United Way’s existence. If employees are laid off, the payroll pledging they have made will not be there for United Way. With this being said, United Way of Nevada County can really use your help. If you would like to get involved and make a difference this is the time to do it. United Way of Nevada County can use your help in many different ways. If you would like to Volunteer, Give, or Advocate for this wonderful community, please contact us at (530) 274-8111. GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER.
